MINIMALLY INVASIVE ENDOSCOPIC SKULL BASE SURGERY WORKSHOP
Department of Neurosurgery, Liaquat National Hospital has arranged a Cadaveric Workshop on 11th December 2009 which was one of its kinds in Pakistan. This was the first ever workshop organized for training neurosurgeons to treat tumors of brain via a small endoscope, through the nose. This results in reducing complications, hospital stay and results.
Dr. Salman Sharif, Consultant neurosurgeon at LNH and also the co-ordinator of the workshop had prepared the workshop in order to teach our fellow Neurosurgeons regarding the minimally invasive technique to approach skull base, which would increase the confidence level among them and in turn would help in treating the pathologies at that level. This would help train young and trained neurosurgeons to learn theses skills before performing these surgeries in patients.
The salient features of the workshop were Lectures and Hands On cadaver Sessions. Endoscopic techniques to approach skull base, surgery for brain tumour via nose and Far Lateral approaches at craniovertebral junction.
For this innovative workshop participants had come from all over the country and instructors comprised of Prof. Naveed Ashraf, Dr Gohar, Dr Moohammad Imran, Dr Ejaz Aslam and Prof. Hameredullah Buzdar. Professor Ahmed Ali Shah famous professor of neurosurgery and present MNA was the chief guest, who gave away certificates and gifts to the participants. Workshops like these will be a mile stone in up bringing the quality of health care in our society and providing first class hands on training to our heath care providers in our country only.
