OV JOOMA MEMORIAL NEUROSURGICAL COURSE

The theme of the First O. V. Jooma Neurosurgical Course was “Learning from the Masters”. The event was attended by many young neurosurgeons, residents and medical students. The course officially started with opening remarks from chairman organizing committee and head of Department of Neurosurgery JPMC, Professor Dr. Sattar Hashim.  First session was moderated by Dr. Ather Enam and Dr. Mumtaz Ali. Dr Najib from Riyadh Saudi Arabia talked about Functional Anatomy of Cerebral Cortex. In his presentation he focused on all recent radiological advances that can be used to study functional properties of different areas of the brain. It was followed by Professor Sattar Hashim’s paper on Functional Sterotaxy. Second session was about basic neurosurgical approaches. Dr Najib presented his paper on Pterional Approach. Dr. Aneela Darbar talked about minimally invasive Supraorbital Eye Brow Craniotomy. Her talk was supported by excellent videos and clinical cases. Dr Ather Enam presented his “small and sweet” paper on Temporal Approaches in his usual interactive fashion. The last pre lunch paper was presented by Dr Brigadier Ishfaq on Approaches to the Sellar Region. The afternoon session contained lectures by Dr Naveed Ashraf and Dr. Aneela Darbar on Midline Trans Basal Approaches and Approaches to the Pineal Region respectively. The last session of the day included a paper on Approaches to Third Ventricle by Dr. Khalid Chishti from Dubai Rashid Hospital. The last event of the fourth session was an interactive discussion on carrier counseling. The panelist included all the leading academic personalities of Pakistani and international neurosurgical community. The important issues discussed were pattern of current neurosurgery training by College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPSP), Intermediate Module (IM) examination, resident exchange programs, national and international fellowships for young neurosurgeons and residency training opportunities for fresh medical graduates in Pakistan and abroad. The official dinner was served at Sheraton Hotel. Chief Guest at the dinner was an eminent Neurosurgeon from Lahore, Professor Nazir Ahmed, President Pakistan Society of Neurosurgeons and Principal PGMI/LGH. Thoughts were shared about the initiative to organize a course as tribute to Legendary Neurosurgeron Profesor O V Jooma.

DAY-2

The proceedings of the second day of the scientific program for the O. V. Jooma course started with the historical lecture by Professor Rashid Jooma titled “O. V. Jooma at JPMC”.  He talked about Professor O. V. Jooma’s arrival at JPMC and how he laid the foundation of neurosurgery in Pakistan single handedly. This was followed by an excellent lecture by Dr Professor Tariq Salahuddin on Retro Sigmoid Approaches which generated good discussion.  Thereafter papers were presented on Endoscopic ventricular anatomy and Approaches. Dr Naqeebullah discussed open approaches while Dr Aneela Darbar highlighted on operative nuances of intraventricular endoscopy. The afternoon session commenced with talks on skull base approaches and role of radiosurgery in skull base lesions. Professor Nazir from Lahore presented his paper on Trans Condylar Approaches to craniocervical junction followed by Dr Najib’s lecture on Role of Radiosurgery for difficult to treat skull base pathologies. Dr Sajid Nazir talked about Trans Oral Approaches for Clival and upper cervical pathologies. This was followed by a thought provocative lecture by Dr Mangi from UK on Role of Stem Cells in Spinal Cord Injuries.
At the end Dr Sattar Hashim concluded the course with his closing remarks and thanked all the organizers and presenters.
