WORKSHOP TO IMPROVE STANDARDS OF  SPINAL SURGERY

Continuing in its trend, Pakistan Society of Neurosurgeons in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic arranged a 3 day comprehensive hand on spine workshop, KarachiSpine2009, from 12th Feb’ to 14th Feb’ at Liaquat National Hospital, Karachi.

Karachi Spine 2009 was a comprehensive course which utilized the hands on stations and didactic sessions, supervised by experienced world renowned faculty. This intensive course emphasized on the fundamentals of spine surgery, particularly biomechanical considerations, and the surgery decision-making process. This hopefully will improve the basic and latest surgical skills concerning different spinal pathologies among neurosurgeons. Neurosurgeons from all corners of the country participated in it. It also raised awareness among the masses that neurosurgeons are the main providers for Spine pathology and its treatment in Pakistan.

Prof Rasheed Jooma, DG heath was the Chairman of the course and Dr Salman Sharif, consultant NeuroSpinal surgeon from Karachi was the workshop coordinator. Dr Salman Sharif gave the introductory talk in which he gave the background of the workshop and the benefits it would bring to community at large. Prof Douglas Orr from Cleveland Clinic and Prof Mehmit Zileli from Izmir Turkey participated as guest faculty and thanked the organizers and Pakistan society for inviting them to Pakistan. Professor Jooma narrated the history of Spinal surgery in Pakistan and thanked the President of CPSP for raising morale of participants by coming to Karachi. The President of the CPSP Prof Zafar Ullah Chaudhry was the chief guest at the dinner of the workshop. Speaking on this occasion Professor Chaudhry praised the neurosurgical community for striving to improve the standards of spinal surgery care in Pakistan. The president of Pakistan Society of Neurosurgeons Prof Nazeer Ahmed and President elect Prof Tariq Salahuddin from Lahore spoke on the occasion. Prof Junaid Ashraf, Prof Ahmed Irfan and Dr Mohammad Imran from Karachi helped the guest faculty.

The theme of the workshop “Spinal surgery is Neurosurgery” reflects the growing confidence of neurosurgeons in conducting complex spinal procedures and an attempt to imprint in public mind the pre-eminent position of Neurosurgeons in this field. This was a unique and great experience for Pakistani Neurosurgeons and will work as a stepping stone for our young Neurosurgeons to become leaders in this field in the future.
